Hannah Finkelshteyn and Aakef Khan
Pay-It-Forward Awardee

After October 7 heightened tensions between student groups at Rutgers, Hannah Finkelshteyn and Aakef Khan chose to connect across differences, forming an unlikely friendship grounded in curiosity and mutual respect. Together with the Bowery Art Collective, they launched Open Archways: By the Light of the Same Moon, an exhibition bringing together 15 Jewish and Muslim artists from New York and New Jersey. Through an innovative artist-meetup model, participants engaged in dialogue and relationship-building before creating original works for the show, fostering meaningful creative and cultural exchange. Hannah and Aakef demonstrate how art can build understanding, empathy, and connection across deep divides.
