Julia Steed Mawson
Pay-It-Forward Awardee

Julia Steed Mawson is a retired biologist and environmental educator who spent 34 years as an Extension Educator with the University of New Hampshire. Inspired by the Season of Faithful Witness / Catholics in Communion campaign, she participated in the 1,500-person public opposition to a proposed ICE detention center near her community. Mawson’s lifelong commitment to education and community engagement continues through volunteer work with the Laudato Si’ Movement, the Catholic Climate Covenant, and the Ignatian Solidarity Network.

Individual award recipients are not eligible for a grant, but can “pay it forward” by recommending a values-aligned organization to receive a grant. When an individual receives a “Pay It Forward” award, they are invited to recommend a grant to a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in their community that is aligned with the values of the project. “Pay It Forward” recipients are typically awarded to one or several individuals for personal acts of courage
